The
chemist FARMACIA ORTO BOTANICO®, is situated in Biancavilla (Catania,
Italy) in Via Vittorio Emanuele 395. It is the Fifth Chemist Site of the
town and is placed in the very historical centre of it, between the two
main squares, Piazza Roma and Piazza Colleggiata.
The
chemist Salvatore Cantarella is the proprietor and he runs it.
Salvatore
Cantarella was born on 26 January, 1963. His parents are Antonio Cantarella,
a chemist too, and Francesca Portale.
Salvatore Cantarella finished High School in 1981 at Adrano's Classic
Lyceum Giovanni Verga.
He took his degree at the University of Catania in 1988. He presented
an experimental thesis on pharmaceutical botany with the following title:
Cognitive investigation on medical plants cultivated by the Abbot Salvatore
Portal (1789-1854) in Biancavilla's Botanic Garden, with particular attention
to those used by popular medicine.
This thesis was both an historical and a scientific research.
Thanks to it, Salvatore Cantarella obtained a prize, consisting of Lit
2.000.000, offered by Opera Universitaria to 20 students presenting a
thesis particularly interesting for Sicilian Region, during the academic
year 1987/1988.
